Over the last few weeks we have had quite a few engagement sessions we have photographed that were simply stunning. From Georgetown to the Monuments and everywhere else in DC we have had some simply beautiful engagement sessions. But along the way we have received e-mails from other photographers, photography enthusiasts and engaged couples asking for “locations around the monuments without hand rails” and “how to shoot in the rain at an angle” essentially people have been asking “How’d we do that?” So here is another installment of Photoshop Ninja: the tale of two pictures (better title needed)
Cloning: We had a beautiful picture taken of our couple in front of the Jefferson Memorial, the Cherry Blossoms were in full bloom, it was extremely early in the morning so we had perfect light, and a sunning couple in a fantastic pose but unfortunately there was a handrail in the way that simply detracted from the moment and the photograph. So we simply removed the hand rails in post-production by cloning out the detracting handrails using both the cloning tool and content-aware fill. As you can see the image looks remarkably better without the hand rails.

Making it Rain (technical term): Our gorgeous urbanite couple looked at the forecast and realized that it may rain, so they scrounged around looking for the perfect umbrella for the perfect “umbrella shot.” Fortunately we had absolutely wonderful weather the day of the engagement shoot; unfortunately not a drop of rain fell so it would be awkward busting out a huge umbrella for no rain. Our clients as well as us were heart set on using the beautiful prop in the engagement session we so we simply made it rain in post-production creating a stunning image of our beautiful couple huddled together under a huge umbrella. This effect was created by layering two photographs on top of each other and changing the luminosity to something that looked realistic while selectively masking out areas of the photograph as needed. Thankfully no one has asked for a tornado in their photographs thus far 🙂
